Phoenix Sullivan is the Winner of the Rejection Letter Challenge!

Posted in Uncategorized by Wayne on April 12, 2010

I’m happy to announce that PHOENIX SULLIVAN is the winner of the first Bo’s Cafe Life Rejection Letter Challenge! She will get a FREE one-page evaluation provided by freelance editor Melanie Rigney, former Editor of Writer’s Digest magazine and former Editorial Director of Writer’s Digest Books.

Here’s what Phoenix had to say:

Thanks for the, uh, dubious honor, Wayne! And what an awesome prize! I’m looking forward to some good, objective feedback from Melanie.

Although you kindly gave us from the first of the year to rack up our rejection numbers, I only needed the month of March, which is when I started querying my near-future science thriller, “Sector C.”

Here’s the logline for that work: Cloning Ice Age mammoths and saber-tooth cats for canned hunts seems like a good business venture — until it reintroduces the species-jumping pandemic that wiped out the megabeasts 8,000 years ago. Now history is about to repeat itself, with humans the next target for extinction.

Lest anyone think me, my query, and my writing samples are total losers, let me hasten to say I’ve taken the advice to query widely to heart. While I’m accumulating plenty of rejections, I also have had several requests for more material and currently have partials out to two agents and requested fulls out with three.

In addition, I have an earlier work — a women’s historical, “Cameliard Rising” — making the rounds. The one rejection I claimed for it came from a publisher, where it was read by three editors before being given a pass.

Many years ago I was part of Marion Zimmer Bradley’s stable of writers, and some of my short stories were published (under my real name) through her in various paperback anthologies and professional SFF magazines. After what’s been a long (long) break, I hope to be published again, only this time in novel form.

All the dirt’s at the new blogsite I launched this past weekend:

I would like to thank all the writers who entered the challenge. I know that it wasn’t easy for you to count your rejections. As you know, I created Bo’s Cafe Life after my civil rights satire was rejected by numerous agents and one publisher. I was sitting in my local cafe, telling my frustrations to a chai latte and a blueberry muffin, when the idea of writing a comic strip about writers in a cafe hit me.  Now, I’m happy that I received those rejections because they led to Bo’s Cafe Life.

Again, congratulations to Phoenix Sullivan!
