It’s a rough road… besides the need to pay the bills, it’s easy to sometimes feel unproductive if nobody is noticing what you’re doing… but if you don’t keep doing it, then you won’t be around when someone does start to notice. That’s me being all introspective and insightful and stuff.

You are absolutely right – if you don’t keep doing it, you absolutely won’t be around when someone does start to notice. True story: After my 1,000th Bo’s Cafe Life strip (that’s right, 1,000th!), I was going to stop because several publishers had rejected the strip. Fortunately, my daughters convinced me to keep creating Bo’s Cafe Life and I’m glad I did. About a month later, an Editor and Writer’s Digest magazine contacted me and said the magazine wanted to give me a contract to publish my strips. That was three years ago. That year, Bo’s Cafe Life also made the Writer’s Digest 101 Best Web Sites for Writers and it’s been on the list for three years, thanks to readers like you! Imagine if I had actually stopped after the 1,000th strip? Thanks for your comment – you know I appreciate it!!

Cool… and it’s exactly what I keep telling myself (and others if they ask me for advice). When you have a small audience it’s really hard to gauge success and it’s easy to feel like a failure… but you can’t control when the audience shows up… and I’ve seen people who gave up before the audience had a chance to show up. When I decided to put some eggs into this basket last July (2014) I knew it was going to be a long/slow crawl… and I figured there would be a LOT of days feeling like I was an abysmal failure. I haven’t “popped” but I can look back and see growth and regular followers and appreciation for what I’m doing… so I try to draw (sometimes literally, heh!) from that and keep plugging along so I can be here when I get discovered 🙂
